How do I rank higher on Google Maps in Australia?

Question

Accepted Answer

Google Maps rankings (the local pack) are determined by three primary factors: relevance (how well your business matches the search query), distance (how close your business is to the searcher), and prominence (how well-known and trusted your business is). While distance is fixed, relevance and prominence can be significantly improved through a systematic local SEO strategy.

**Google Business Profile Optimisation**

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important factor in Google Maps rankings. A fully optimised GBP includes: a complete and accurate business name, address, and phone number (NAP) that matches your website exactly; the correct primary and secondary business categories; a comprehensive business description that includes your primary service keywords; high-quality photos (exterior, interior, team, products/services) — businesses with 10+ photos receive 35% more website clicks; regular GBP posts (at least weekly) that keep your profile active; and Q&A responses that demonstrate engagement. Many Australian businesses have incomplete GBP profiles — simply completing all fields can move you from page 2 to page 1 of the local pack.

**Review Generation and Management**

Reviews are the most powerful prominence signal for Google Maps. The quantity, recency, and quality of reviews all influence rankings. A systematic review generation strategy — asking every satisfied customer for a review, making the process as easy as possible with a direct review link, and responding to every review (positive and negative) — typically generates 3–5× more reviews than a passive approach. For Australian businesses, targeting 50+ reviews with an average rating above 4.5 is a strong foundation for local pack rankings.

**Local Citation Building**

Citations — mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites — are a key prominence signal. Australian businesses should be listed on: Google Business Profile, Australian Business Register, Yellow Pages, True Local, Yelp Australia, Hotfrog, and industry-specific directories. Consistency is critical — the NAP must be identical across all citations. Inconsistent citations (different phone numbers, address formats, or business names) confuse Google's local algorithm and suppress rankings.

**Website Local SEO**

Your website signals to Google what geographic area you serve and what services you offer. Key on-site local SEO elements include: location-specific pages for each suburb or city you serve, LocalBusiness schema markup with your complete NAP information, location-specific content that mentions local landmarks and community references, and a consistent NAP in the footer of every page.
