How do I build an e-commerce store in Australia without a developer?

Question

Accepted Answer

Building an e-commerce store in Australia without a developer has never been easier, thanks to the maturity of no-code e-commerce platforms. The right platform depends on your product type, expected order volume, and the complexity of your pricing and fulfilment requirements.

**Shopify: The Market Leader**

Shopify is the recommended starting point for most Australian e-commerce businesses. It supports all major Australian payment gateways — Afterpay, Zip, PayPal, Stripe, and direct bank transfer — has a large ecosystem of Australian-specific apps, and offers 24/7 support. A basic Shopify store can be set up in a weekend for $39/month plus transaction fees. The platform handles hosting, security, and performance optimisation automatically.

Shopify's key advantages for Australian businesses are: native support for Australian GST (including automatic tax calculation and BAS-ready reporting), integration with Australia Post and major freight carriers for real-time shipping rates, and a large marketplace of Australian-specific apps for loyalty programs, reviews, and local delivery management.

**Wix eCommerce: Design Flexibility**

Wix eCommerce is a good option for businesses that want more design flexibility and already use Wix for their website. The drag-and-drop editor enables highly customised storefronts without coding skills. Wix supports PayPal, Stripe, and Square, but has more limited support for Australian-specific payment methods like Afterpay compared to Shopify.

**Squarespace Commerce: Visual-First Brands**

Squarespace Commerce is ideal for product-focused businesses that prioritise visual presentation — photographers, artists, food producers, and fashion brands. The platform's design templates are among the most visually sophisticated of any no-code builder, and the integrated blogging and portfolio features make it well-suited for brands where content and commerce intersect.

**The SEO Imperative**

The most important thing to get right from day one is SEO. E-commerce stores that don't rank on Google for their product categories generate zero organic traffic and are entirely dependent on paid advertising. The key SEO requirements for e-commerce are: unique, keyword-optimised product descriptions (not manufacturer copy), category pages targeting high-volume search queries, product schema markup for rich results, and a blog or content hub that builds topical authority.

**PresciaIQ's E-Commerce SEO Setup**

PresciaIQ offers an e-commerce SEO setup package ($2,500) that includes product page optimisation, category page structure, schema markup, and Google Shopping feed setup — ensuring your store is found from launch. For Shopify stores, PresciaIQ also offers a programmatic SEO extension that generates unique category and collection pages targeting long-tail product search queries.
