What is the best website platform for Australian businesses?

Question

Accepted Answer

Choosing the right website platform is one of the most consequential decisions an Australian business makes in its digital strategy. The wrong platform creates technical debt, limits SEO performance, and requires expensive migration later. The right platform provides a foundation that scales with the business.

**Shopify: Best for E-Commerce**

Shopify is the clear leader for Australian e-commerce businesses. It supports all major Australian payment gateways (Afterpay, Zip, PayPal, Stripe, and direct bank transfer), has a large ecosystem of Australian-specific apps, and provides 24/7 support. The platform handles hosting, security, and performance optimisation automatically, allowing business owners to focus on products and marketing rather than technical infrastructure. Shopify plans range from $39–$399/month (AUD equivalent), with transaction fees that decrease at higher plan tiers.

**WordPress: Best for Content-Heavy Sites**

WordPress powers approximately 40% of all websites globally and remains the most flexible content management platform. It is ideal for businesses that publish significant volumes of content — blogs, news sites, resource libraries — and need granular control over SEO settings. The main limitation is performance: WordPress sites require careful optimisation to achieve the page load speeds that Google's Core Web Vitals require. Managed WordPress hosting from providers like WP Engine or Kinsta ($30–$100/month) addresses most performance issues.

**Astro and Next.js: Best for Performance and SEO**

For businesses where organic search performance is a primary goal, Astro and Next.js are the superior choices. Both frameworks generate static HTML at build time, achieving sub-400ms page load times that satisfy Google's Core Web Vitals requirements and provide a significant ranking advantage over dynamically rendered WordPress or Shopify sites. Astro is particularly well-suited for programmatic SEO implementations — PresciaIQ's BuildHire deployment generates 84,000+ static pages with sub-400ms load times using Astro. Next.js is better suited for applications that require real-time data or user authentication.

**Custom Development: Best for AI-Powered Platforms**

For businesses building marketplaces, SaaS platforms, or AI-powered applications, custom development on React, Next.js, or Astro is the appropriate choice. Off-the-shelf platforms cannot accommodate the complex data models, AI integrations, and custom user experiences that these use cases require.

**PresciaIQ's Platform Recommendations**

PresciaIQ recommends Astro for programmatic SEO and content-focused builds, Next.js for AI-integrated web applications, and Shopify for e-commerce. All PresciaIQ web builds use modern, performance-optimised stacks that achieve Core Web Vitals scores in the top 10% of Australian websites. The platform recommendation is included in PresciaIQ's free fixed-price proposal, which is delivered within 5 business days of receiving a project brief.
