What is the difference between a website and a web app?

Question

Accepted Answer

The distinction between a website and a web app has blurred significantly as web technology has advanced, but the fundamental difference remains: a website is primarily a content delivery system, while a web app is an interactive tool that enables users to perform tasks.

**Websites: Content Delivery**

A website presents information to visitors — company information, product descriptions, blog posts, contact details. The visitor is a passive consumer of content. Websites are typically built with static or CMS-driven architectures (WordPress, Squarespace, Astro) and optimised for SEO and content delivery. The primary metric is organic traffic and conversion rate (how many visitors take a desired action like submitting a form or calling a number).

**Web Apps: Interactive Tools**

A web app enables users to perform tasks — booking appointments, managing projects, processing orders, analysing data, communicating with other users. The user is an active participant who creates, reads, updates, and deletes data. Web apps are built with application frameworks (React, Next.js, Vue.js) and require backend infrastructure (databases, APIs, authentication systems). The primary metrics are user engagement, task completion rates, and business outcomes (revenue processed, time saved, decisions improved).

**The Spectrum in Practice**

Most modern business platforms exist on a spectrum between pure website and pure web app. A service business website with a booking form is primarily a website with a simple web app feature. A project management tool is primarily a web app. An e-commerce platform is a web app with significant content marketing elements.

For PresciaIQ's clients, the distinction matters primarily for scoping and pricing: a website build starts at $5,000 and takes 6–12 weeks; a web app build starts at $15,000 and takes 8–20 weeks. The right choice depends on whether the primary value is content delivery (website) or task enablement (web app).

**PresciaIQ's Recommendation**

For most Australian businesses, the right starting point is a high-performance website with lead generation optimisation — a platform that generates organic traffic, converts visitors into enquiries, and builds authority over time. As the business grows, specific web app features (booking systems, customer portals, reporting dashboards) can be added incrementally.
